OOAK (One of a Kind) Container Gardens, in Jungle Log format!  I'd like to share with you some interesting combinations of groups of epiphytic plants that like similar conditions, to make a dramatic, top to bottom "jungle-esque" display of vibrant, textural greenery.

This jungle log is a mixed planting containing a Brassavola nodosa with a very large Sinningia insularis and a couple springs of an unidentified Rhipsalis.  They are all well established, though the sinningia is overshadowing the rhipsalis, so its hard to see.  They'll contribute more to the display as they grow up.

The Sinningia insularis has done amazingly well on this mount, with the tuber having tripled in size since it was mounted.  It has bloomed multiple times, and doesn't even seem to care that I've never given it a dormant period.  It just periodically through the year adds new foliage and flowers, which leads to the absolute ball of leaves you see today.

Meanwhile, the Brassavola nodosa is happily blooming also!  And remember, this species is night fragrant, so you have that to look forward to as well.  Note- the flowers are newly opened at time of listing, but depending on when you purchase it may not still be in bloom upon arrival.

This is already a stunning display, and will only improve with age and more flowers.

Specs:

  • PLANTS
    • Brassavola nodosa (easy cattleya type orchid with white flowers, fragrant at night)
    • Sinningia insularis (tuberous, caudex-like gesneriad with stout foliage and orange flowers.  Attractive to hummingbirds)
    • Rhipsalis species (epiphytic succulent with long, branching stems)
  • Container
    • Cork slab
  • Recommended care
    • As for warm growing cattleya: bright light, warm house temperatures.
    • Water slab thoroughly when it dries out, frequency will depend on your local conditions (humidity, temperature) and may be every 1-3 days.
    • TIP: In the summer, if inside your home the humidity level is low, root growth can be enhanced with frequent misting of exposed roots.
