OOAK (One of a Kind) Container Gardens, in Jungle Log format!  I'd like to share with you some interesting combinations of groups of epiphytic plants that like similar conditions, to make a dramatic, top to bottom "jungle-esque" display of vibrant, textural greenery.

This is a cork tube hosting a mixed planting of Peperomia rotundifolia (string of turtles) and multiple young Rabbit's Foot Ferns.  These all seem satisfied with this arrangement.  You may have seen this peperomia in the garden center in pots of dirt, but they are far easier to maintain on a mount, which is their preferred way to live! These ferns also are epiphytic, and adaptable to all kinds of conditions.

The mount is a cork 'tube', a round piece from a branch that has maintained it shape.  There is an opening down the back, but as it curves around, you can expect the ferns to take advantage of the entire surface.  If hung vertically in a location with light from multiple sides, the ferns will eventually crawl around the entire thing producing a fantastic 360 degree display of blue-green fronds and thick, furry golden rhizomes.

Right now, the fronds are small as the ferns are young, but these can get very large fronds, 2-3 feet in length.  Rhizomes can have a diameter of up to that of a quarter.

Specs:

  • PLANTS
    • Peperomia rotundifolia pilosior (aka Peperomia prostrata, "string of turtles" - an epiphyte easier to grow on a slab than it is in a pot!)
    • Polypodium (Phlebodium) aureum (Rabbit's Foot Fern) - an adaptable fern with thick furry rhizomes
  • Container
    • Cork round - curved, almost tube shaped, emulating a branch, 21 inches in length
  • Recommended care
    • Light - Low, as for phalaenopsis - 1-2h early morning sun or your preferred artificial light
    • Water when dries out by spraying or passing water over the top - depending on your conditions, season, etc., every 1-2 days, but its okay to skip some days if you go away for the weekend!  They'll be fine.
    • TIP: Excellent choice for a greenhouse cabinet, which will decrease watering frequency and make for busy plants.
    • TIP: Hang the mount vertically for best display.
    • Maintenance: Take cuttings of the Peperomia periodically to maintain size.

You will get the exact mount shown.
