Maxillaria tenuifolia aurea - You've probably heard of the famous 'coconut orchid' with a scent often described as coconut suntan lotion. Generally they are a brick red. But here we have a yellow-flowered variety, with the same great fragrance!
The species tends to show out best under the same kind of light as the average mini-catt, but they will also grow and flower under "phalaenopsis" levels. They also like to climb. You can this habit a couple ways: (a) by training it up a tall mount, or perhaps try a moss pole, or (b) keeping it in a basket and allowing it to drape over time. For the second option, given enough time, a spcimen can grow into a giant leafy ball this way, so it has its advantages. Either way, in the hot months make sure to spray down the entire plant often to make sure any aerial roots are supported. The root ball itself should not be kept constantly wet.
These divisions were started in 3" pots of sphagnum, and are now established, and so ready for new homes! You will get one of the plants shown or one similar in size. These are blooming size but not currently in bloom. Flower photo is for example only.
