Sinningia leucotricha is a Brazilian native african violet relative, related to gloxinias. It has spectacular plush, slivery leaves, a caudex-like tuber, and flowers attractive to hummingbirds.  Mostly the species blooms seasonally in the spring, just as they come out of dormancy, but on occasion you may get some late season flowers as well.

This is one of the easiest Sinningia to grow. It typically has an active summer growing season, loving frequent watering but not waterlogged conditions and bright light. Use a high porosity soil mix. My stud plants live outside in the summer in light shade, with direct sun for about half the day. A west or south facing window in the house would be equivalent. In the winter I bring it inside to a cool growing area (about 55F, but a drafty, chilly windowsill will suffice) to let it go dormant. Water only infrequently during dormancy. They typically shed their foliage during dormancy.

For a primer on dormancy cycles in sinningia, see this blog post.
