Sinningia leucotricha is a Brazilian native african violet relative, very closely related to gloxinias. Perhaps the you'll see the resemblance especially to gloxinia in its tube shaped flowers and fuzzy leaves. Actually, it has spectacular plush, slivery leaves.  It also forms a caudex-like tuber which can get quite large. The flowers attract hummingbirds.  The species typically blooms as they come out of dormancy, and sometimes, randomly add a few flowers throughout the summer as well. Mostly they bloom seasonally in the spring, just as they come out of dormancy.

This is one of the easiest Sinningia to grow. It typically has an active summer growing season, loving frequent watering but not waterlogged conditions and bright light. Use a high porosity soil mix. My stud plants live outside in the summer in light shade, with direct sun for about half the day. A west or south facing window in the house would be equivalent. In the winter I bring it inside to a cool growing area (about 55F, but a drafty, chilly windowsill will suffice) to let it go dormant. Water only infrequently during dormancy. They typically shed their foliage during dormancy. This is in bold because its important that you don't worry the plant is dead when this happens.

For a primer on dormancy cycles in sinningia, see this blog post.

    All Around Wow

I was so thrilled with my little Caudex! It shipped the day after I ordered it, and arrived the day after that from across the country. It was very thoughtfully packaged, and as I unwrapped it I was delighted to find it had leaves and flowers! I was just expecting a bulb so what a wonderful surprise! It was a little wilty upon arrival just from transit, but it quickly perked up once I planted it in some moist soil. Very glad I found this shop!
